Electricity prices in Maine increased 14% between 2024 and 2025, faster than almost every other state in the country. Compared to 2015, electricity prices have risen by 78% – more than double the nationwide rate of increase – while household incomes have not kept pace.
Deploying clean energy could cut energy costs by up to 20% in Maine.
Why are prices so high in Maine?
Natural gas supplies about half of Maine’s electricity. When natural gas prices rise because of supply disruptions or high demand, electricity prices for Maine families rise, too.
Maine’s electricity grid is aging and needs repair and modernization. That decay increases the cost of delivering electricity. Central Maine Power customers have seen a 145% increase in distribution rates, and households in Versant MDP territories faced a 212% rise in transmission costs between 2015 and 2024.
More Supply.
Lower Prices.
Expanding energy supply through wind, solar, battery storage, and grid modernization will help reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets and create more reliable and affordable electricity for Maine families and businesses.
